6. Tailoring Your Resume for ATS and Human Recruiters

What is ATS?

An Applicant Tracking System scans your resume for keywords to filter out unqualified applicants before a human even sees it.

Tips for ATS Optimization:

  • Use standard job titles and plain formatting

  • Mirror keywords from the job description

  • Avoid tables, graphics, and unusual fonts

  • Submit in .docx or PDF formats (based on instructions)

Tailoring Your Resume:

Customize each resume submission. Modify your:

  • Summary

  • Keywords in work experience

  • Skills section

Use tools like Jobscan to compare your resume against job descriptions.

7. Resume Writing Best Practices

  • Keep it concise: Ideally one page; two max for experienced professionals

  • Use bullet points, not paragraphs

  • Avoid personal pronouns (I, me, my)

  • Focus on achievements, not just duties

  • Use keywords strategically

  • Stick to active language: Led, Managed, Built, Delivered

8. Design, Layout, and Formatting Tips

Fonts:

  • Use modern, readable fonts: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Cambria

  • Size: 11–12 pt body text, 14–16 pt for headings

Margins and Spacing:

  • 1-inch margins all around

  • Use consistent spacing (white space helps readability)

Colors and Graphics:

  • Stick to black, gray, or navy for text

  • Avoid images, headshots, or heavy color unless you're in a design field

Section Headings:

  • Bold or capitalized

  • Clear and easy to scan

9. Common Resume Mistakes to Avoid

  • Typos and grammatical errors

  • Using outdated job duties that don’t show value

  • Overstuffing with buzzwords (“go-getter,” “team player”)

  • Being too vague (“Responsible for sales”)

  • Using an unprofessional email address

  • Including personal details (DOB, SSN, photos)

  • Lying or exaggerating — background checks are real

10. Final Thoughts

Writing a resume is a strategic process. It's about presenting your experience in the best possible light, tailored to your target job, and optimized for both human recruiters and ATS.

Checklist Before You Submit:

Is it tailored to the job?
Is it free from spelling and grammar errors?
Are your accomplishments quantified?
Is the layout clean and easy to read?
Does it highlight your most relevant strengths?
